MedMark Services, Inc. has been awarded the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) 2013 Science and Service Award for the treatment of Opioid-Related Disorders. SAMHSA is a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This national award recognizes Medmark, a leading provider of opioid treatment programs in California, Texas, Georgia and Maryland for excellence in improving patient outcomes using evidence-based practices.
The 2013 SAMHSA Science and Service Award honors recipients for their innovative and outstanding implementation of services that complement SAMHSA’s work toward comprehensive treatment in the field of addiction medicine. A panel of experts in the field of opioid addiction selected MedMark Services as an award winner for their creation of “The Dashboard” to measure and track performance improvement in relation to patient access, retention and treatment effectiveness.
Sharon Dembinski, Director of Quality and Clinical Service, led The Dashboard project with the support and involvement of the eighteen opioid treatment programs operated by MedMark Services. David K. White, President and CEO of MedMark, stated that “this project demonstrates that when an organization is innovative, resources are in place, and leadership is given data on the results they achieve before and after strategies for improvement are initiated, enhanced outcomes will occur.” Further, communication of progress to the clinical team via the Dashboard helps build focused momentum towards the achievement of quality goals.
During the comparison period of 2010 – 2012, Improvement areas included:
- The percentage of patients admitted within 24 hours of first contact improved approximately 80%.
- The percentage of patients that stayed in treatment for at least 90 days improved to 66 – 79%.
- The percentage of Urine Drug Screens positive for illicit opioids decreased by approximately 20%.
In order to qualify for this recognition, MedMark has complied with SAMHSA’s standards for recognized programs including accreditation by a SAMHSA-approved accreditation body as well as certification by SAMHSA. Interventions offered at the program site have demonstrated evidence-based outcomes with improved program achievements.
